1. Read the following verse and answer the questions that follow:

The sea is a hungry dog,
Giant and grey.
He rolls on the beach all day
With his clashing teeth and shaggy jaws
Hour after hour he gnaws
The rumbling, tumbling stones,
And 'bones, bones, bones!'
The giant sea-dog moans, licking his greasy paws.

A. Complete the following sentences: 1×3=3

(i) The sea appears to be like a hungry dog that is giant and grey. 

(ii) The sea gnaws the rumbling, tumbling stones.
(iii) Throughout the day the sea moans like a dog by licking his greasy paws.


B. Answer the following questions: 2×2=4

(i) With whom has the sea been compared?

Ans : The sea has been compared with a hungry dog.

(ii) What does the sea do all day?

Ans: All day the sea rolls on the beach with his clashing teeth and shaggy jaws. 

2. Do as directed: 1×5 =5

(i) The coach said to the players, "Bravo! you have played well." (Change into Indirect speech)

Ans : The coach applauded the players, saying that they had played well.

(ii) Every morning he has to go for a walk. (Underline the Infinitive used in the sentence)

Ans : Every morning he has to go for a walk.

(iii) Nowadays supply of food grains is abundant. (Replace the underlined word with its antonym)

Ans : Nowadays supply of food grains is scarce.

(iv) This is the place where Rabindranath was born. (Underline the Main Clause and circle the Subordinate
Clause)

Ans : Main clause – This the place.

Subordinate Clause : where Rabindranath was born. 

(v) The news that shocked me proved false. (Identify the type of clause used in the sentence)

Ans : “That shocked me” – Subordinate clause (Noun Clause)

3. Write a paragraph in about 80 words on 'The usefulness of regular exercise'. You may use the following points: 8

Points: importance of physical exercise– various types of exercise– when it is done –health is wealth – Conclusion

THE USEFULNESS OF REGULAR EXERCISE

Regular exercise or Physical exercise means systematic exercise of the different parts of the body to keep them strong and vigorous. It’s also a good habit to keep our body fit and sound. It includes walking, riding, swimming, running, yoga, various freehand exercises and so on. Outdoor games and sports also provides good physical exercise. The necessity of physical exercise is recognised by all. 

It keeps our body strong and fit. It increases flexibility in joints, decreases pain, protects our heart and blood vessels. It also improves sleep quality, enhances our mood and boots energy level. It also reduces our risk of diabetes. Without proper exercise the body becomes weak. 

Bodily weakness makes us liable to diseases, and diseases react upon the mind. If a man is physically unwell, he can’t be mentally happy. Life becomes a burden to him and he takes jaundiced view of life. 

Exercise is also an abiding source of pleasure. It implies self control and strengthens our character. It makes us capable to face hardship. Thus it gives us the power of performing better intellectual work.
