Question : Why did Lomov think about taking a decision about getting married ?

Ans : In the play, ‘The Proposal’ Lomov appears as an interesting character. He wanted to marry Chubukov’s daughter Natalya Stepanovna. In the play Lomov described his reasons which forced him to take the decision of marriage. He was thirty five years old. According to him it was a critical age and thought that further waiting might lead in surpassing the ideal age for getting marriage.

Besides that he wanted to lead a quiet and regular life because he thought himself to be a weak man suffering from numerous diseases. So, he needed to be looked after by somebody.

In addition to that, Lomov found an ideal wife in Natalya whom he thought as an good looking, excellent and well-educated house keeper. Therefore all these reasons encouraged Lomov to get married.


Question : “Why are you so formal in your get-up?” — Who is the speaker ? Who is being spoken to ? What led the speaker to make this comment ?

Answer : The speaker is Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov.

The person who is being spoken to is Ivan Vessilevitch Lomov.

Lomov went to Chubukov’s house to ask for his daughter’s hand. In order to impress Natalya, he wore a dress and white gloves. But Chubukov was surprised to see Lomov’s formal dress and Lomov’s polite behaviour seemed a little suspicious to Chubukov. He thought that Lomov was trying to impress him so that Lomov was trying to please him so that he could borrow money from him. So, in an attempt to know Lomov’s real intention behind wearing an evening dress to a neighbour’s house, Chubukov made the remark mentioned above.


Question : Why does Lomov think Natalya will make an acceptable wife ? Explain your answer.

Answer : In the play, ‘The Proposal’ Lomov is a 35 year old bachelor. According to Lomov it is a critical age. He suffers a high level of nervousness for which he passes many sleepless nights. Now he wants to lead a quiet and regular life. So he comes to Chubukov’s house to propose marriage to his daughter Natalya because he finds in Natalya an ideal wife. 

In his soliloquy, Natalya is well-known to him for a long time as a good neighbour. He himself gets help from her on many occasions. He also remarks that Natalya is good looking and we’ll educated. She proves herself as an excellent housekeeper. He thinks that these reasons are enough to marry her. In addition, she is the only heiress of Chubukov’s property. She handles the property with extreme consciousness. 

So, after thinking about all these aspects rationally, he concludes that Natalya is definitely an acceptable wife and he should get married to her as soon as possible.


Question : Describe briefly the flight regarding Oxen Meadows.

Answer : Lomov comes Chubukov’s house with the intention of proposing marriage to Natalya. When Natalya and Lomov interact, their chat pleasantly hovers on weather and agriculture. To facilitate his marriage proposal, Lomov mentions the intimacy between the two families. This leads him to mention Oxen Meadows which he declares to be his family property. Natalya instantly flares up in disagreement and makes a contrary claim.

Instantly, Lomov forgets his real purpose of visiting Natalya’s house and they fall to quarreling with each other. Lomov’s declares that Oxen Meadows belong to them and also adds that his aunt’s grandmother gave the free use of Oxen Meadows to the peasants of Natalya’s father’s grandfather, in return for which they were to make bricks for his aunt’s grandmother. The farmers of her father’s grandfather had the free use of the meadows for forty years.

But Natalya claims that her grandfather and great-grandfather owned the Meadows for nearly three hundred years. Despite regarding the land occurred many times but they were able to establish the Meadows belonging to them. It was also proved that their land was extended to Brunt Marsh including Oxen Meadows.

Lomov cuts in and announces that he has enough documents in support of his claims. Needless to say, Chubukov and Natalya pay no heed to the words of Lomov. Then, Natalya argues that the meadows are not worth to her, but she can’t stand unfairness. Lomov says that he is acting on principal and if Natalya wants he will make a present of them. In this way the dispute continues.


Question : “I'm the most unhappy men!” — Who said this? Why did he say so? How did the speaker get rid of his unhappiness?

Ans: The above quoted line was said by Chubukov.

Lomove came to Chubukov's house with an intention to propose Natalya. But he was involved in two successive arguments with Natalya. In course of the quarrel over the hunting dogs Lomov losed his consciousness and fainted. At this Natalya and Chubukov thought that Lomov had died. All aon a sudden Chubukov faced with such a shocking turn of events and he thought of the loss of prospective groom of his daughter. Then Chubukov exclaimed so.

When Lomov came round, Chubukov wanted to waste no time in putting Lomov's hand into his daughter's and get the married then and there. He gave his blessing and wanted they would leave him in peace.
