Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:


He caught hold of a little net and dipped it into the water. He brought the little

doll out. But she slipped out and fell on the table banging her head.

She began to cry. Up came a policeman doll and said fiercely, “What are you doing, 

catching the doll and making her bump her head like that?”

“I was saving her from drowning !” said Tuffy.


ACTIVITY: 1

Fill in the charts with information from the given passage:

Cause  Effect

Ans:

( i) (Cause) Tuffy wanted to save the little doll from drowning. 

(Effect) Tuffy dipped the net into the water.

(ii)(Cause) The little doll fell on to the table.

(Effect) The little doll got a head injury and began to cry.

(iii) (Cause) doll was banged on the table for Tuffy’s mistake.

(Effect)The policeman doll talked fiercely.


ACTIVITY : 2

Classify the underline words of the given sentences in the correct columns. One is done for you:

(i) Sugar is sweet.

(ii) This is my book.

(iii) You should carry an umbrella while going out.

(iv) My mother has long hair.

(v) Give me a glass of water.

Answer:

 Countable noun : Book, Umbrella, glass.       

Uncountable noun : Sugar,  Hair, water


ACTIVITY : 3

Make sentences with the following words.

( i) Despair :  People often take wrong steps in despair.

(ii) Sturdy : The villagers tied the thief with a sturdy rope.

(iii) Mystified :  The tricks of the magician mystified the crowd.

(iv) Rescue : The villagers rescue the child from drowning.

( v ) Exciting : It was an exciting moment when father gave me a new bicycle.

Countable Nouns: Nouns which can be counted.

(i) Sugar is sweet.

(ii) This is my book.

(iii) You should carry an umbrella while going out.

(iv) My mother has long hair.

(v) Give me a glass of water.

In  sentences (ii), (iii), (v) - ‘book’, ‘umbrella’, ‘glass’, can be counted. So they are  countable Nouns.

Uncountable Nouns : Nouns which can't be counted.

In  sentences, (i), (iv), (v), ‘Sugar', ‘hair’, ‘water’, can't be counted. So they are uncountable Noun.

Always remember, uncountable nouns generally refer to substances liquid or solid, states, events, feelings etc.
